Професія графічного дизайнера давно стала однією з найзатребуваніших на ринку. Зараз важко уявити успішний бренд, айдентику якого не розробив би дизайнер.

Через повномасштабне вторгнення росіі в Україну багато людей потребує зміни професіі, для того щоб мати можливість працювати, тому ми вирішили запитати у нашого графічного дизайнера Свєти, як вона опановувала цю професію,та що для цього потрібно і важливо робити.

Як ти стала дизайнером?

« Мені подобався дизайн в цілому, так як до цього я працювала з одягом. Та в деякий момент я зрозуміла, що хочеться подорожувати і працювати одночасно, адже це стало більш можливим, я почала шукати професію, яка мені більш всього буде до душі.

Одразу вирішила йти до графічного дизайну, пройшла декілька курсів, з різних сфер графічного дизайну і щоразу закохувалась більше у цю працю. Шукаючи курси, я дуже багато читала інформації, для мене було дуже важливим, хто є викладач, який в нього досвід та чого він може навчити.
Спираючись на це, я знайшла школу, яка імпонує наразі мені більше всього, це Sochnik Design School, вони дуже багато роблять для своїх студентів та навчатися там було справжнім насолодженням.
Проходила курс по ілюстрації у Тані Якунової, надалі також планую продовжити вдосконалювати свої знання у цій школі дизайну.»

Наскільки ця професія сьогодні затребувана і де працюють дизайнери?

« Цей фах насправді ніколи не перестане користуватися попитом, тому що чим більше з’являється різних компаній, тим більше роботи у дизайнерів, адже кожна компанія потребує ідентифікації. Зараз вже немає таких, які б існували без візитівок, логотипів, реклами. Також доволі часто компаніі  займаються ребрендингом, оновлюють увесь свій візуальний контент. Відповідно, все це – робота дизайнерів.

Якщо говорити про простіші речі, то дизайнери також розробляють листівки, сувенірну продукцію, ілюструють книжки. Не будемо також забувати про те, як зараз розвиваються 3D-друк і сфера його застосування. І робота дизайнера в цій галузі затребувана.

Щодо web – UІ/UX, складається враження, що скоро вже кожен з нас буде мати власний сайт. І все це – також робота дизайнерів.

Чи потрібен талант чи гарний смак щоб опанувати цю професію?

«Талант – це не завжи може бути вроджений дар. Це старання, розвиток та відпрацювання своїх навичок. Не завжи одразу може з’явитися вірний та супер професійний смак. Тільки навчання і практика допоможуть вам розвинути свої скіли та з кожним разом відвищувати ваш рівень професійності. »

Які навички  та програми потрібні для опанування графічного дизайну?

« 1.По перше, база графічного дизайну – це колористика та основи композиції, живопису і малюнка; а також види і жанри графіки і графічних технік;
2.Володіння професійними програмами для графічного дизайну таких як:
✔️Аdobe Illustrator – векторна програма. У ній зручно малювати картинки чи окремі елементи, тому що векторне зображення можна збільшити хоч у 100 разів, а фотографію – ні
✔️Аdobe Photoshop – растрова програма. 80% роботи роблю в ній: створюю будь-які картинки для диджиталу, дизайн сайту, поліграфію
✔️Аdobe InDesign – програма для верстки, наприклад, щоденників або буклетів
✔️Corel Draw – графічний редактор векторної графіки
Та чимало інших, але я  перелічилa найважливіші 🙂
3.Знати основи маркетингу, щоб розуміти ключові принципи, які сприяють успішному просуванню продукту на ринку;
4.Володіти англійською мовою не на початковому рівні;
5.Розуміти психологію споживача, потрібно розуміти таргет твоєї роботи, та оцінювати розроблений креатив з обох боків.

Окрім цього, потрібно володіти почуттям стилю, мати критичне мислення, дотримуватися навичок тайм-менеджменту. »

Чи потрібно слідкувати  за сучасним  тенденціям у дизайні?

« Часом ти навіть сам не розумієш, звідки взявся той чи інший тренд. Але в дизайні все циклічно. Ми надихаємося художниками, дизайнерами, які працювали 5-10 років тому. Часто хочеться чогось нового. А щось нове – це добре забуте старе. Тому і звертаєшся до світових дизайнерів, які працювали кілька років тому. Я думаю, що тренди змінюються скоріше від перенасичення стандартними шаблонними рішеннями.

І так звісно, за трендами потрібно слідкувати, для того  щоб вдосконалюватися та досягати найкращих результатів у цьому напрямі, робити круті та модернові креативи, варто слідкувати за трендами та продовжувати навчатися. »

Якими професійними якостями має володіти людина, що прагне стати дизайнером?

« Уміння красиво малювати – це однозначно не найголовніше. Малювання просто може в деяких сферах пришвидшити роботу, наприклад, якщо ви одразу візуалізуєте свою ідею в скетчі.
Але сьогодні є стільки цифрових девайсів, графічних планшетів, фільтрів, ефектів колажування через фотографію, що у сфері дизайну немає потреби, щоб фахівець добре малював. Це просто додатковий навик. Але ми, дизайнери, працюємо через спеціальні програми, тому там треба добре вміти володіти комп’ютерною мишкою і «гарячими» клавішами. Інколи буває, що вміння малювати навіть трохи заважає в дизайнерській роботі. Ти починаєш більше згадувати правила академічного рисунку,а це трохи може відводити тебе від дизайну у сферу образотворчого мистецтва

Як hard skills дизайнери зазвичай  вказують щось по типу «умію працювати у фотошопі та ілюстраторі». Це вміють усі :))Бо це ази професії.
Набагато цікавішим є soft skills, бо він позначає універсальні навички, які не приурочені до професії дизайнера. Мова про емоційний інтелект, цілепокладання, селф-менеджмент, емпатію, грамотну письмову та усну мову, знання мов тощо. Ці якості можуть дуже вигідно відрізняти вас на ринку, але найчастіше цей пункт формулюють максимально банально: пишуть про стресостійкість, комунікабельність та пунктуальність. 

Soft skills – це про унікальність, над ними потрібно добре подумати. »

Які ти б хотіла дати поради, для тих кто хоче опанувати цю професію?

« Можна опановувати цю професію самостійно, можна піти вчитися на спеціальні курси. Найважливіше – це ваша зацікавленість і вмотивованість опанувати цю цікаву сферу діяльності. Крім того, доведеться присвячувати цій професії чимало часу, навіть якщо досягнете рівня висококваліфікованого спеціаліста.

В Інтернеті можна розшукати чимало безкоштовних курсів, які дадуть розуміння, в якому напрямку рухатися. В процесі опанування професії графічного дизайнера можна виконати кілька безкоштовних проєктів, щоб наповнити портфоліо і збагатитися практичним досвідом. Можно  пошукати курси, які пропонують такий формат навчання.

Щодо портфоліо у багатьох є думка, що в портфоліо потрібно розміщувати тільки найкращі роботи, що не варто завантажувати його прохідними проектами. Але я за те, щоб публіковати весь ваш список проектів, тому що вважаю, що лише проаналізувавши якісне зростання дизайнера, можна зрозуміти динаміку, з якою він може зростати та розвиватися вже всередині компанії. »

« Я підготувала та рекомендую, на мій погляд, добірки, які допоможуть покращити навички та знаходити надхнення, бо тематична література та вивчення напрацювань інших вебдизайнерів допоможуть вам вийти на новий рівень.

📖 «Тепер ви це бачите. Та інші есе про дизайн»  Майкл Бейрут

У книжці  автор розмірковує про історію та напрями дизайну, про власний шлях у професії, про шрифти та колір, архітектуру, імітації та попкультуру, стосунки з клієнтами, про будинок свого дитинства та логотип президентської кампанії Хілларі Клінтон. Багаторічний досвід роботи допомагає Бейруту глибоко аналізувати предмет і при цьому писати просто, зрозуміло та з гумором

📖 «Графічні стилі. Від вікторіанців до хіпстерів» Стівен Геллер, Сеймур Кваст

Книжка містить інформативні статті про основні явища, стилі та напрями, що зумовлювали розвиток графічного дизайну. Також, можна знайти велику кількість ілюстрацій, що перетворюють цей результат співпраці двох дизайнерів на наочний довідник, який завжди корисно мати під рукою як початківцям, так і досвідченим дизайнерам.

📖 «Дизайн звичних речей» Дональд А. Норман. У книжці автор розглядає звичайні дизайнерські помилки та пропонує різні способи їх уникнути. Також  вчить помічати гарний дизайн і прийоми, до яких вдаються вдумливі фахівці.

📖 Дуже рекомендую прочитати книгу Йоханнес Іттен «Мистецтво кольору». Вона навчила мене працювати з кольором і дала фундаментальні знання про корекцію кольору.

З курсів можу виділити Еллен Луптон і Дженніфер Коул Філліпс «Основи графічного дизайну: ключові принципи візуального проєктування» – безкоштовний онлайн-курс 

Мінікурс «Adobe Illustrator для новачків» від Вероніки Полякової де авторка розповідає про інтерфейси та інструменти популярного графічного редактора.
Та Школа дизайну Canva, що надає початкові знання принципів графічного дизайну з простими вправами.

Для натхнення можна використовувати ці ресурси:

Behance. На сайті зібрано чималу колекцію вдалих прикладів у будь-якій сфері дизайну, можна стежити за новими проєктами, підписатися на найцікавіших дизайнерів і студії.

Awwwards. Ресурс присвячений найкращим роботам у вебдизайні. Тут можна знайти підбірки найкращих сайтів за день, тиждень, місяць або рік.

Synaptic Stimuli. Галерея різноманітних проєктів. Розвиває почуття прекрасного.

Design Shack. Сайт для дизайнерів, де не хвалять, а критикують. Новачки, напевно, дізнаються для себе багато корисного.»

Важливо пам’ятати при вірному підході кар’єра в індустрії дизайну є творчою, корисною та прибутковою.

Graphical Designer: How to Master the Profession and What is Required for that

Graphical Designer became one of the most demanded professions on the labor market a long time ago. Nowadays, it’s hard to imagine a successful brand, whose identity hasn’t been developed by a designer.

Due to the full-scale russia’s invasion of Ukraine’s territory, many people have to change their specialty to be able to work; that’s why we decided to ask our Graphical Designer Sveta how has she mastered the profession, that is required for that, and what is crucial to do.

How did you become a designer?

« I enjoyed design in general since I had been working with clothes. But at some point, I understood that I wanted to travel and work at the same time because it had become more possible; I started looking for a profession that would be after my own heart. Right away I decided to go into graphic design, completed several courses in its various fields, and was falling for this job more and more. While looking for courses, I read a lot of information on them since it was very important to me who was the teacher, what was their experience, and what they could teach me. Based on this, I found the school that impressed me the most so far, named Sochnik Design School. They do a lot for their students and studying there has been a real pleasure. I took an illustration course with Tanya Yakunova, and in the future, I also plan to continue improving my knowledge in this school of design. »

Is this profession much demanded now, and where do designers work?

« This profession will never stop being demanded since the more companies appear, the more work is there for designers because every company needs an identity. Nowadays, there are no companies that could be existing without business cards, logos, and advertising. Companies also rebrand often, updating their entire visual content. Respectively, all of that is the designers’ job.

Talking about simpler things, designers also develop postcards, souvenirs, and illustrate books. It is also important to mention how 3D printing and its scope are currently developing. And designers’ job in this field is highly demanded.

As for web – UI/UX, it seems like each person is going to have their own site soon. And all that is also the designers’ job. »

Are talent or good eye required to master this profession?

« Talent is not always a natural ability. That includes effort, self-development, and working off one’s skills. A proper and super professional sense of taste may not always come at once. Exercising and practicing are the only activities to help you develop your skills and increase your level of professionalism more and more. »

What skills and software are required for mastering graphical design?

« 1.First of all, the very basics of graphical design are coloristic and the basics of composition, painting, and drawing; as well as types and genres of graphics and graphic techniques.
2.Being a confident user of the following software for graphical design:
✔️Аdobe Illustrator is a vector program. It’s convenient to draw pictures or specific elements since a vector image can be scaled up at least 100 times, while a photo cannot.
✔️Аdobe Photoshop is a raster program. I do like 80% of my work using this program, creating any images for digital, site design, and polygraphy.
✔️Аdobe InDesign is a program for page layout designing, for instance, diaries or booklets.
✔️Corel Draw is a graphical editor of vector graphics.
And many others; however, I’ve listed the most important ones 🙂
3.Knowing marketing basics to understand the key principles that contribute to the successful promotion of the product on the market.
4.Knowing English better than at the elementary level.
5.Understanding customer psychology; it’s necessary to understand the target of one’s job and evaluate the developed creativity from both sides.

In addition, it is required to have a sense of style and critical thinking, while adhering to the skills of time management. »

Is it necessary to follow the modern tendencies of design?

« Sometimes there’s no understanding of where a trend comes from. However, everything is cyclical in design. We get inspired by artists and designers, who were working like 5-10 years ago. Something new is often wanted, and the new is a well-forgotten old. That’s why we turn to the worldwide designers who worked a few years ago. I believe that trend changes are rather caused by the glut of standard template solutions.

And of course, it is necessary to follow trends for self-improvement and achieving the best results in this direction, as well as creating cool and modern creativities. Thus, it is worth following the trends and continuing to learn from them. »

What professional qualities are a must for a person who wants to become a designer?

« Being skilled at drawing is definitely not the main thing. Drawing might hasten the work at some points, for example, if an idea is visualized in a sketch straightaway. However, nowadays there are many digital devices, graphic tablets, filters, and collage effects through a photo, so there is no need for a specialist to be skilled at drawing in this field. It’s more of an additional skill. However, we, designers, work using special software, so we must be skilled in using a computer mouse and hotkeys. Sometimes being skilled at painting even hinders design work. The rules of academic painting come to mind, and that disturbs, leading to fine arts when it’s necessary to focus on design.

Designers usually state something like “I know how to use Photoshop and Illustrator” to be their hard skills. But everyone knows that :)) Those are the very basics of the profession.

Soft skills are way more interesting since they denote generic skills that are not related to the designer’s profession. Those are about emotional intelligence, goal setting, self-management, empathy, proper both written and spoken language, knowledge of languages, etc. These qualities can very well distinguish you in the labor market, but often this point is formulated as a cliché: people write about stress resistance, communicability, and punctuality.
Soft skills are about uniqueness, they should be well thought out. »

What would you advise to the people who want to master this profession?

« The profession can be mastered both on one’s own and in special courses. Most importantly, one must be interested and motivated in mastering this intriguing activity type. In addition, a lot of time must be devoted to this profession, even if the level of a highly qualified specialist is reached.

There are numerous free-of-charge courses on the Internet, and they can provide an understanding of what direction to move in. In the process of mastering the profession of graphic designer, you might perform several free projects to fill your portfolio and gain some practical experience. You can also look for courses that offer such a format of studying.

Regarding a portfolio, some think that only the best works should be shown in the portfolio, while insufficient projects should not be uploaded. But I prefer publishing an entire list of projects since I believe that only by analyzing the qualitative growth of a designer, one can understand the dynamics in which they are able to grow and develop within our company. »

« I have prepared a list of the best (in my opinion) compilations that are to help you improve your skills and find inspiration since thematic literature and checking on the practices of other web designers are to help you reach a new level.

📖Now You See It and Other Essays on Design by Michael Bierut
In this book, the author considers the history and directions of design, his own path in the profession, fonts and color, architecture, imitation and pop culture, customer relations, a house of his childhood, and the logo of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. Many years of experience help Beirut to deeply analyze the subject while writing simply, clearly, and with humor at the same time.

📖Graphic Style: From Victorian to Hipster by Steven Heller and Seymour Chwast
The book contains informative articles on the main facts, styles, and trends that led to the development of the graphic design. Also, you can find a large number of illustrations that turn the result of the collaboration of two designers into a visual guide, which is always useful to have on hand for both beginners and experienced designers.

📖The Design of Everyday Things by Donald A. Norman
In this book, the author reviews common design issues and offers various ways of avoiding those. In addition to that, he also learns to notice a good design and the approaches that are used by skilled professionals.

📖I highly recommend reading The Art of Color by Johannes Itten. This book taught me to work with colors and provided me with fundamental knowledge of color correction.

And Canva Design School, which provides basic knowledge of the principles of graphic design with simple exercises.

Design Shack. A site for designers, where they do not complement one’s works but criticize those. Beginners could probably learn a lot of useful things here.

It is important to remember that with a proper approach, a career in the design industry is creative, useful, and profitable.
